Our staff carry out research and offer teaching and supervision for honours and postgraduate study across a broad spectrum of areas including Islamic history, Islamic philosophy, modern Middle Eastern history, politics of the modern Middle East, Shi'ism, Sufism, cultural studies of the modern Middle East, Persian, Arabic and Turkish languages, translation studies, diaspora studies, modern and classical Arabic literature, modern and classical Persian literature, cinema and media studies of the Middle East.

In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, IMES achieved the second-highest national result (in a tie with Oxford), confirming the department's continuing role as a leading programme for research and study of Islam, the Middle East, and other related subjects. Over 70% of research activity in IMES was classified as being 'world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour'. Furthermore, IMES, was successful in its competitive bid to establish the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (with the universities of Durham and Manchester), and most recently received a large donation to establish the Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World.
