Taught MSc in Middle Eastern Diasporas

New in 2011/12!

A unique insight and understanding of the Middle East, its diversity and peoples

This programme is the first of its kind in the UK to bring together the disciplines of Middle Eastern Studies and Diaspora Studies. In doing so, it provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore the vibrant blend of cultures, religions and ethnicities of the Middle East and their histories and impact in the region and beyond.

Focusing on Middle East minorities, diasporas and relationships with their ‘Others’, this degree provides an intellectually rigorous and rewarding engagement between area studies, social science and the humanities. Underlying the programme are fundamental questions about being rooted and routed, belonging, displacement, community, citizenship and state and the effects of the processes of globalisation on identities. It is ideal for those seeking a multi-layered understanding of the region for either academic or professional purposes.

For admission to the MSc in Middle Eastern Diasporas programme, the Department normally requires an undergraduate masters degree with the equivalent of 2:1 or better. Non-native speakers of English must normally attain a 7 in the IELTS test (or TOEFL equivalents).

Studying MSc Middle Eastern Diasporas

The degree will draw on expertise from across the University, and in particular, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES), the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW) and the Alwaleed Centre.

The programme consists of two core courses (Diaspora Studies: Theories, Concepts and Methodologies; Diasporas of the Middle East) ; two research units (Research Skills and Methods; Research Methods and Problems); and two Option Courses chosen from a list of relevant courses available in IMES and other departments of the university such as History, Divinity, Politics and International Relations. Students may also take additional courses in introductory Persian, Turkish or Arabic language.

During the summer you will write your 15,000 word dissertation on a relevant research topic agreed with your appointed supervisor. This is due towards the end of August.
