Andreas Goerke works on Islamic history and historiography and among his interests is the early religious history of Islam through the study of the literary sources. He will be managing the network, organizing the meetings and participating in the development of the website and in the editing of the proceedings of the conferences.

Mattia Guidetti mainly works on the fate of non-Muslim material culture after the Islamic conquest with an emphasis on the relationship between churches and mosques. In his publications a special focus has been put on the processes of adoption of pre-existent holy sites by Muslims in the early Islamic period.

mosque-1 Alan Walmsley

Alan Walmsley’s research and archaeological activities focus on the early Islamic period in the Middle East. He excavated the mosque of Jerash in Jordan but also published on the transformation of the sacred landscape in late antiquity and after the Islamic conquest. The activities of the people at MIRI aim at working on material culture in order to produce a better understanding of Islamic societies with also a special emphasis on the issues related to the contemporary exploitation of cultural heritage.
